The Women's Art Project
"The journey from the small world of the home and its
private transactions into the larger, open arena of the public, work,
or art-world has not been a one-way trip. Women wanted to infuse the humane
values of the home into the more violent, mysterious world of the workplace
or the dangerous city at night. And they wanted to expose the hated skeletons
secreted in the closets of the house to public view so as to bring social
justice and censure to bear on them. Homemaking has always been an important
aspect of political and artistic work: shelters and recovery homes serve
as homes-away-from-home; extended families and new kinds of homes of our
own making are created to facilitate collaboration in professional work;
and public houses of women's culture welcome the visitor and call the
artist home to herself."
-- Arlene Raven in At Home, Crossing Over: Feminism and Art
of Social Concern

1903, at the original Toledo Museum of Art, by a group of 18 Toledo women
artists. Athena’s purpose is to assist and encourage women in all branches
of the visual arts. The approximately 65 members of the Athena Art Society

An Art Workshop
Artist Trading Cards: An Experiment in Aesthetics
Presented by Madeline Muntersbjorn, UT Associate Professor of Philosophy
Tuesday, March 18 1 - 2:30 pm
Discover an international project of
creating one-of-a-kind miniature pieces of art to be shared among artists.
Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) employ techniques used in collage, book art,
rubber stamping, mail art, journaling and digital art. However, strictly
speaking, ATCs do not have to be made out of paper. They may be made in
series or limited editions, displayed in groups, or simply shared among
friends. They are never to be sold. Workshop participants will not only
discuss the experiment but also participate by making small works of art to
trade or submit to the Intimate Artifacts exhibit. Old cards, paper, ink and
stamps will be supplied. For more information on this art form:
