Tara Turski Artist Statement As children we are told what to do and given vague answers about the truth of reality. Therefore when reality actually invades a child’s universe, there is a slight hesitation and fear that engulfs the child. I personally took that fear that I felt and internalized it for a number of years. I refused to show any weakness or display any pain that I felt from my mother’s death. Instead I became an impassive eleven years old, whose only concern was for that of her brother and sister. Now as a young adult, and an artist, I look back and examine that fear and pain that I felt, not only examining it but also accepting it and allowing myself to release it. From this self-exploration I have created the series entitled “ Distant Realities”. The series consist of imaginative realities of a child’s psyche. The spaces are quiet with a subtle feeling of loneness and emptiness. They represent the place of escape from the real world reality of hurt, anger and pain that I felt from the loss of my mother.
