MJ Seltzer

Artist’s Statement

These studies in portraiture are those of friends or self, seen as reflections or pieces of memory. Most works incorporate sign language imagery. Hand gestures convey not only an insight or abstracted feeling about the subject, but voice a bridge between visual and written language symbolism.

The works are originally produced with graphite, iron oxide, aluminum and other minerals in stick, powder or liquid form. The intention is to maintain a high level of emotionalism with little or no use of color. Collage is combined in relief adding a shallow three-dimensionality and visual inflection.
